Until December 31, 2004 the Power sector in the State was governed by the Department of Power. The motto of the Department of Power includes:
- Meeting the state's requirement of power to boost its economic growth.
- Undertaking strategic long-term planning for power generation and the implementation of power projects.

Since its establishment, this department was responsible for overseeing the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity, as well as rural electrification initiatives. Additionally, the Department of Power was a participating member of the Northeastern Regional Electricity Board.
In August 2003, the state government-initiated reforms and reorganized the power sector with the aim of fostering sustainable development within the sector and enhancing the efficiency of service delivery. Subsequently, the Tripura Electricity Regulatory Commission was set up by the state government on May 31, 2004, making Tripura the second state in the northeastern region to constitute a State Electricity Regulatory Commission.
The power sector of the state underwent corporatization, leading to the establishment of Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL), which commenced its operations on January 1, 2005. Under the Electricity Act of 2003, TSECL is recognized as a presumed licensee for the distribution of electricity. The generation aspect was detached from TSECL, resulting in the creation of a new company called Tripura Power Generation Limited (TPGL) in January 2015, and later, Tripura Power Transmission Limited (TPTL) was established on January 19, 2023.
